Skyland Firewise

The Skyland Firewise community completed a second day of cleanup along the southern end of Skyland Road in April. We thank the landowners, volunteers, work crews, and neighbors who offered equipment and support. We take fire risk very seriously and will continue our work this fall. Stay tuned for our next workday and other updates.

We received our Firewise Certificate. Families are starting to see their discounts apply, if only for this single requirement. Every little bit helps. Santa Cruz County requires residents to “clear vegetation along roads that front your property, and along driveways, at least 10 feet back and 15 feet above the canopy.” Property owners may face citations and penalties for non-compliance. All properties in our must meet these requirements in order for us to continue qualifying for discounts.

I’d like to recognize the work being done by the Cal Fire Soquel Demonstration State Forest, forest manager Colin Noyes, and the dedicated Cal Fire engine companies assigned to reducing fuel along Adams Road, adjacent to SDSF. In May, the Cal Fire crews cleared and chipped accumulations of woody fuel and small trees and improved overhead clearance along this portion of Adams Road.

The Skyland Firewise Community is thankful for the support shown in cleaning “Indian Rock” on Adams Road. This land was donated to the state and is an adjunct to the Soquel Demonstration State Forest. We also thank the local homeowners who stored equipment over several weeks. The area is looking better already.
