Kevin Grier and Amy Ramsay Our district’s summer reading program returned for its second year, and once again our students rose to the challenge. Thanks to Diane Harit, Param Matharu, Elke Billingsley, and Charlotte Boisvert- Khandelwal for providing this wonderful opportunity for our students.

The program was open to kindergarten through outgoing eighth-grade students. Our “Read for the Mountains” program encouraged students to read books, magazines, and graphic novels, and listen to audiobooks during their summer break.

Students chose their own prizes based on the number of hours they read, making every milestone even more rewarding. The program wrapped up with raffle prizes awarded at a root-beer social. More than 100 children, about 25 percent of the students in our district, participated. We are impressed by our students’ enthusiasm and commitment to reading, and grateful to our families for supporting their children’s reading habits. Thank you to the C.T.

Whether you have an hour each week or can help occasionally throughout the year, your time and talents make a meaningful impact on our students and staff. Volunteer opportunities include classroom assistance and support in the library, art, and garden, and yard-duty supervision. School Priorities: What We Learned When it comes to our children’s education, every parent in our mountain community has a vision of what matters most. It could be maintaining small class sizes, preserving hands-on art, or protecting weekly music This spring, the Loma Public Education Fund set out to turn those individual ideas into a shared vision for our schools. Nearly a hundred local families responded to the KEEP priorities survey, giving LPEF a clear blueprint for how our community wants to invest in Loma Prieta Elementary and C.T.

The survey revealed strong consensus around core academic support and specialist instruction. Funding for a 12th classroom teacher at Loma Elementary was the top priority, followed by art instruction for kindergarten through eighth grade, and the developmental physical-education program On the flip side, the feedback also gave us a clear picture of where community support fell short. Coming in at the bottom were expanded library hours at C.T. English and establishing a transitional-kindergarten (TK) program. A TK program comes with a considerable price tag—$110,000 for a teacher and $32,000 for a general-education a surge of write-in comments urging the preservation of our music program. LPEF also heard that when families see which programs are on the chopping block, many are motivated to give larger gifts.

LPEF worked with district administration to establish the list of programs that our $350,000 donation would help fund this school year. They include art at Loma Elementary and C.T. English (along with Prop 28 funding); developmental P.E., music, and a 12th classroom teacher at Loma Prieta; an expanded computer-science elective at C.T. English; and seventh-grade Turning these priorities into reality requires ongoing support, and there is no better way to contribute than at LPEF’s annual gala.

Last year’s event raised over $153,000 in net profit while bringing together community members, teachers, and volunteers to celebrate our unique mountain schools. The tradition continues on Saturday, October 3, with a smooth-sailing Yacht Rock theme at a private residence on the mountain. The beginning of a new school year is a great time to settle back into routines that help children feel ready and confident each day. Regular bedtimes and wake-up times, laying out clothes the night before, packing backpacks, and having a consistent morning routine can make school days run much more smoothly. Encourage your child to take an active role in getting ready for school, whether that means filling their water bottle, checking their backpack, or remembering what they need for the day. A little preparation and consistency at home can go a long way toward helping students arrive at school rested, independent, and Lakeside will kick off the school year with a dine-out fundraiser on Wednesday, September 2, at Pizzeria Vittoria in Redwood Estates (21433 Broadway Road).

Join us starting at 6 p.m. for delicious wood- fired pizza, games, and live music. Pizzeria Vittoria will donate 10 percent of the day’s proceeds to the Lakeside School Community Foundation, that helps fund music, physical education, technology, and more at Lakeside Do you need to clean out your closets, garage, or outbuildings? Lakeside hosts a Goodwill donation drive at Lakeside on Sunday, September 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Goodwill Silicon Valley can’t accept furniture, mattresses, large appliances, exercise equipment, automobile parts, weapons, household trash, food, carpeting, construction debris, hazardous household chemicals, liquids of any kind, pet-related items, items over fifty pounds, and television sets with over 27-inch screens. They can accept microwaves, VCRs, printers, and vacuums in good working order. You may drop off donations to the Lakeside School Community Center during school hours, between August 31 Everyone is welcome to bring your blankets and lawn chairs for a family movie night under the stars on Friday, September 18, at the Lakeside School campus (19621 Black Road). Delicious tacos prepared by the Agrillo family will be available for purchase beginning at 6 p.m. The movie will start at sundown.
