Join us for Soundacruz, a festival of sound arts that will be held outdoors at the Loma Prieta Mountain Community Complex, gazebo, and playfield on Saturday, September 5. Artists will set up from noon to 4 p.m. Public performance and viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Enjoy an afternoon of experimental sound arts in our beautiful mountain community. You might catch a live electronics set, a static- sound installation, acoustic improvisation, or something harder to categorize. Performances vary in length. Drop in and out as you please.

This event is free. Just show up, walk around, listen, and enjoy. Some artists may pass a hat or have a tip jar. Tips are always appreciated, but never required. Share Your Sound. Loma Prieta Museum Mountain History Barbecue Old Time Mountain Crime history Roger Mason The Mountain History Barbecue will be held on Saturday, September 26, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Mason-Taylor Ranch, 22849 Summit Road. This annual family event will include a barbecue lunch, live music by The Wildcat Mountain Ramblers, local history talks, old-fashioned children’s games, and a history scavenger hunt. You can also purchase Loma Prieta Museum clothing and history books.

Local historians will present old-time mountain crime history, revealing what it was like living in the wild Santa Cruz Mountains. In addition, we will recognize the Summit Riders Horseman’s Association. Melany Moore will present a short history of the organization, that was formed in 1967 and recently ceased operations.

The historic Mason-Taylor Ranch was homesteaded by the Schultheis family in 1851 and includes early Native American sacred sites, the location where Mountain Charlie recovered after a grizzly-bear attack, early farming and farm buildings, old wagon roads, and a Georgian Victorian house.

Save the date for a Loma Prieta Museum presentation on Thursday, October 22, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Loma Prieta School Forum. Martin Rizzo-Martinez, a historian and assistant professor in film and digital media at the University of California, Santa Cruz, will share information about early Native American history.

He is the author of We are not Animals: Indigenous Politics of Survival, Rebellion, and Reconstitution in Nineteenth-Century California, a history of Native Americans of the Santa Cruz area.
