Bus Routes in the Mountains

Eli Asheghian

The Los Gatos Youth Commission, as part of their slate of public-transit policy goals for the 2026-27 term, seeks to establish a bus route from Los Gatos to various locations in the mountain community. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), which manages bus routes and light rail through Santa Clara County, could receive over $250 million in funding from a sales-tax initiative on the ballot this November. The VTA plans to use those funds to expand its service. Based on conversations with VTA representatives, this could support a mountain bus route.

I’ve lived in the mountains for 13 years and have been involved in town government for the last 3 years. I currently serve as chairperson of the Los Gatos Youth Commission in addition to my advisory role on the Complete Streets Commission.

I know people who have been in accidents on Highway 17. It is one of the most dangerous highways in the state. All of our residents, from newly licensed teenagers like me to aging seniors, must drive Highway 17 every day because there are no affordable alternatives. I’ve always wanted to use my experience to bring a bus route the mountains, to increase our safety as well as our transit flexibility. This is a huge opportunity.

We welcome your feedback about where and when mountain residents might use a VTA bus route. Complete a quick survey. Your input will benefit our efforts by demonstrating to the VTA that this is a beneficial new program worthy of their consideration.

Holiday Shipping

The holiday season is the busiest time of the year for the U.S. Postal Service, which delivers almost 10 billion pieces of mail and packages between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

If you have holiday packages and cards to mail, don’t wait in endless lines in town. The Redwood Estates Post Office, located just a half-mile off Highway 17 in “downtown” Redwood Estates, is rarely crowded, even during the busy months of November and December. Postmaster Amy Yang is always helpful, friendly, and efficient.

December also brings an increase in mailbox and package theft. Consider renting a secure post-office box in Redwood Estates. For P.O. box holders, UPS, FedEx, Amazon, and OnTrac parcels are accepted at the post office for safe pick-up during business hours. The P.O. box lobby is always open, including Saturdays and Sundays.

The Redwood Estates Post Office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is located at 21432 Broadway Road, across from Pizza Vittoria and next to the Redwood Estates Store.
