California Sea Hare
By Bruce Sudweeks · October 2026 · Volume MMXXVI, Number 10

For the past 50 years, the California sea hare has been well known in the scientific community. The neurons in their nervous system are rather large, which makes them easy to study. They are used to study memory, learning, and behavior. In the year 2000, a Nobel prize was awarded to Eric Kandel for his pioneering studies using the sea hare. The University of Miami runs a farm where researchers can purchase sea hares. The current price for an adult sea hare is $14. The pictured sea hare is a local from San Carlos beach in Monterey.
